More than half of Representatives could return to Washington.
Majority Whip Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday that more than half of the members of the U.S. House of Representatives could return to the capitol on Thursday to pass a coronavirus relief bill that would fund small business loans and hospitals. He believed both parties would approve the legislation.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he believed the Senate and White House had a deal. “I think we will be able to pass this today,” he said in a Tuesday morning interview.
The package would provide an additional $350 billion to the small-business lending program that has been so successful, as well as $75 billion for hospitals and $25 billion to expand testing.
“There are still a few more I’s to dot and t’s to cross, but we have a deal,” Senator Schumer said.
The House is also working on a proxy vote mechanism whereby they might not be required to vote in person during the time of the coronavirus pandemic. The House is currently on recess, due to return May 4.
